2009 Auction Leaves Guests & Beneficiaries Somewhere Over the Rainbow

A sold-out crowd of 250+ people gathered at the Columbia River Yacht Club April 4 to attend the 12th Annual Home Builders Foundation Auction, themed There’s No Place Like Home.  This year’s celebration was as much about friend-raising as it was fundraising, netting over $71,000 for the Foundation’s shelter development program, HomeAid Portland. The ballroom was gorgeous – overlooking the Columbia River, with an array of rainbow of colors to play up the evening’s theme.

Auction committee chair Melody Tennefoss credits this year’s memorable and impactful program to the well planned thematic elements and strong cause messaging.

“There were humorous vignettes throughout the auction venue…short videos played, educating the crowd about the Foundation’s programs, yet they were full of whimsy and featured renown HBA members supporting our events and programs every step of the way.  I’m so thankful for everyone’s support this year, despite the difficult times.”

The purpose of the event was not lost on the crowd, despite the whimsical design elements, fantastic auction items, and fun-filled dinner program. When the time came for the Special Appeal: Paddle Raise benefiting the Cordero House boys, a short video played for the audience taking them for a walk in the boys shoes…there wasn’t a dry eye in the room.    The HBF hopes to create a long term supportive connection between HBA members and the Cordero House serving at-risk youth who have turned their lives around and future build projects to come.    The silent auction tent was beautiful featuring themed baskets, the Wine Wall of Hope and free flowing wine. The Lemon Drops and Flip Flops Party (for ladies only) sold out quickly – “$100 by-the-head” raising $2500!  Now an annual tradition, Mary Sackhoff (of Arbor Custom Homes) will again host this popular soiree.  The quality and value of items included in this year’s auction were fabulous, thanks to the efforts of a fantastic auction procurement committee. “It’s been a tough year for all of us, but Bank of the West (the event’s presenting sponsor) wanted to show their support of the Foundation’s signature event.  I just needed to be more creative about our support!  The Foundation’s work is close to my heart,” said Katie Kadlub, this year’s procurement chair.
