VOLUNTEER PAINTERS TEAM UP TO TACKLE TWO JANUS YOUTH SHELTER PROJECTS
Around 60 volunteers took part in painting two youth shelters across Metro Portland for the 2018 Painting a Better Tomorrow. Painting a Better Tomorrow is a partnership between the Home Builders Foundation, Miller Paint and Rodda Paint. Now in its 12th year, Painting a Better Tomorrow pairs volunteer teams from the home building industry alongside professional paint contractors to help spruce up local shelters. In addition to volunteer labor, Miller Paint and Rodda Paint donated over $3750 in paint and supplies to the projects.Volunteer teams from Lakeside Lumber, Washington Federal, Montgomery & Graham Inc., and California Closets worked on the two youth shelter sites, both of which are operated by Janus Youth Programs. Paint contractor teams from Miller, Rodda, First City Painting, Don Rhyne Painting and Dream Weaver Painting led volunteers on painting walls, windows and door trim throughout the well-used spaces.Luke Morley and his kids worked alongside representatives from Miller Paint at Cordero House, a transitional home for teenage boys that was renovated in 2011 by the Home Builders Foundation. Trina Strand, Program Director for Cordero House, and more than a dozen boys that live at the home, welcomed volunteers with a homemade banner, coffee and breakfast snacks. The fresh coat of paint was a great help to Trina, who was busy juggling her normal routine in managing the house. Jesse Gann, the site leader from Miller Paint, quickly took charge and stationed volunteers in various rooms of the first floor. By lunch, all the painting was complete and lunch from Pizzicato had arrived.Over at the Janus Youth Programs site in Goose Hollow, a much larger project coordinated by Bob Barnes and Lis Weller from Rodda Paint ensued, in a shelter that regularly houses 70 youth from ages 15 to 23 years. A total of 50 volunteers - a healthy mix of experienced paint contractors and volunteers from the home building industry - gave a much needed coat of paint in a space that hadn’t been painted in nearly a decade.
