HBF Helps PHFS Build 26-Family Shelter in SE Portland

In December of 2019, HBF and seasoned shelter provider, Portland Homeless Family Solutions celebrated the opening of shelter to house twenty-six families in what is now called the Lents Family Village. Around $750,000 of in-kind donations were provided to make the $2.5 million dollar project a reality. Using "trauma-informed" design, lead designer Jessica Helgerson Interior Design took bold steps to make the space more than just a homeless shelter, but a place of refuge for families that have come upon hard times.

Most importantly, this shelter will be able to handle three times the amount of families the three shelters PHFS previously operated in Goose Hollow and downtown Portland could manage. Up to 100 people at any given time will seek relief in the new Family Village, where PHFS now have beautiful offices and meeting space under one roof. Another important distiction and draw to the Lents neighborhood is its proximity to afforable housing that PHFS guests will ultimately need in the search for permanent, supportive housing.

Builder Captain, Clear Water Construction Services, took on the 18 month-long project with Carleton Hart Architecture, Corlett Landscape Architects, Maul, Foster & Alongi and Walsh Construction as project consultants. Much changed since the initial planning of the project, but overall the construction took less than nine months minus the delays in permitting and structural review. The overall scope of work included renovating a behemoth 15,000 square foot former 1960s era church structure as well as detached apartment buildings containing eight apartments. The campus the complex of building sits on features a parking lot, basketball court, dog trot, play area and garden space.

Around 100 vendors supported the project including major donors Viking Automatic Sprinkler, Westside Drywall, Fireside Home Solutions, Washington Federal, Builders FirstSource, PARR Lumber, Parr Cabinet Design Center, Lakeside Lumber, Milgard, Ferguson, Contractor Furnishings Mart, Daltile, Pacific NW Marble & Tile, Innova NW, Schoolhouse Electric, Aldercrest Construction, Rejuvenation, Chown, Allied, Allwood Hardwood Flooring, Roll & Hill, Brendon Ravenhill, Miller Paint, GLUMAC, Schlage, the Shade Store, Sport Court of Oregon, CADMAN, Cascade Concrete Accessories, Mutual Materials, Portland Sand & Gravel, Landscape East and West, Huntco Site Furnishings, Naomi Miller, Pratt & Larson, Statements Tile, and Sherwin-Williams among others. Thanks to everyone who partcipated!
