Hot Fun in the Summer Time

Donors celebrate at NW Natural

The five- star view of the Willamette River helped make an August gathering especially luxe for Home Building Foundation and our supporters. We are fortunate Board Member Jeffery Tamburro helped us reserve the NW Natural Gas downtown Portland rooftop for our annual Donor Appreciation Event.

We raised a glass with several of our other board members as well, Diana Lal, Gwen Ozaki and Lea Schneider. Our thanks to Founder Rudy Kadlub and Director Emeritus Jim Standring for joining us. Other attendees included some of our wonderful Building Hope Gala and Auction Committee and sponsors.  This lively group tells us they are already planning for next year’s Gala, to be held June 1, 2024 at Tumwater Vineyards. The group is researching their “White Party” theme, and plan to stage another stellar event in 2024.

The event featured savory treats prepared by Celebrate! Catering. This invite-only event is a chance for us to say thank you to some of the people who give their time and energy to help HBF build shelter, and build futures through construction training.

Block Party Bonanza

Beautiful sunshine over Sherwood in late July featured a preview party for the 2023 NW Natural Street of Dreams. A dream team sold raffle tickets for two airline tickets anywhere Alaska Airlines flies to benefit HBF. Left to Right, Jana Capua, Michelle Wallace, Michelle Kinder and Dan Cruz gave persuasive sales pitches as they walked around the party, giving each person who bought a raffle ticket a flashy ‘bling’ ring.  Their selling skills helped light up the street, and raised nearly $3500 for HBF programs.

Bling Ring sellers

This VIP event brings together an array of professionals from the residential construction business; builders, suppliers, designers, and sponsors are among the crowd that gathers for an exclusive behind- the- scenes look before the show opens. More than 1200 people toured that night, and in the process learned more about HBF.

Guests enjoy HBF school built benches

Beautiful cedar slat benches built by students at Sherwood High had a prominent display in front of wonderful graphic signs, explaining Foundation’s projects, as well as the many attributes of the Home Building Association. Signs by the benches explained how the students used lumber from Builders FirstSource to build the benches. Party goers looking for a nice spot to chat with their friends gathered around the benches, and learned how the benches will be donated to a nonprofit following the show. HBA generously gave Street of Dreams tickets to the Sherwood High School students who built the benches, as well as to all local high school construction teachers.

One of our supporters also helped us send party-goers home with a lasting memory from the Block Party. The Oregonian’s “Here is Oregon” Community Connections team brought a fun photo booth to cap off the night. Creative props gave party goers a chance to clown around with some harmless power tools.

"Street" Paved with Gold for HBF

Warm summer nights drew in large numbers of the public to the 2023 NW Natural Street of Dreams as well, making a lasting impact on future projects and outreach HBF can bring to the Greater Portland community.

Ed and Penny Shaw taking a break

HBF has long been the “Charity of Choice” for the Home Building Association of Greater Portland show. Previously, ticket sellers at the entrance of the NW Natural Street of Dreams had asked people to make a voluntary donation to us. When the event went to digital ticket sales this year, the HBA made the decision to directly donate $1 per ticket to the Foundation with each general admission. This could result in a large donation for HBF at a time when the need to build facilities for people experiencing homelessness is at an all-time high. If you’d like to help with our fundraising efforts, and to help us plan our next engaging events, we’d love to include you. Please contact Development Manager Kyle Ellerbe, kylee@hbapdx.org. You can make additional donations on our website at www.BuildHopePDX.org.
