St. John's Village Thanks HBF
St. John’s Village residents have safe new homes because of the hard work of Home Builder’s Foundation and our shelter partners. On May 21, the community joined together to thank HBF, Do Good Multnomah, the City of Portland, Multnomah County and many local partners which worked together to complete the project.
The sleeping pods at the new St. Johns Village opened this spring for 19 residents with the help of HBF Builder Captain, Nathan Young with MODS PDX, Inc. HBF helped with the coordinated effort that involved pro bono design work, donated appliances and furnishings, and hundreds of volunteer hours spent painting, installing plants, and putting up fencing.
In all, 50 local businesses contributed time, materials and work toward the project, part of a coordinated effort that provided $200,000 of in-kind contributions. Home Builders Foundation pitched in an additional $44,000 in cash grants to support the construction.
The St. Johns Village is a housing-services-focused, alternative-shelter community made up of 19 heated, insulated sleeping pods. The village also includes a common building that provides laundry, full bathrooms and a full-service kitchen, along with classroom and gathering spaces.
The village is operated by Do Good Multnomah, a shelter and housing services provider, with funding from the Joint Office of Homeless Services. Do Good Multnomah provides case management assistance and connects participants with health and housing supports.
The program was constructed and developed with funding from the City of Portland, along with contributions from local businesses and the Home Builders Foundation. Land for the village is leased from St. Johns Church, which is part of the St. Johns Welcomes the Village Coalition.
