Roofers tackle a tough job

Women Roofers in Action

Shingles in the trash

A busy team of women were in constant motion in front of Project Homeless Connect in Hillsboro, unloading plywood, gathering up falling shingles, and generally getting their hands dirty. These members of the local chapter of National Women in Roofing gave their time this summer to help with HBF’s remodel of the day shelter serving people experiencing homelessness. The women worked, or paid for their staff members to come tear off the aging roof and to build a new one.  From what HBF Project Manager Chris McDowell observed, the project came just in time “The roof probably needed replacing 15 years ago!” The team found the rafters and beams all rotted through.

These roofing professionals coordinated the work party to align with Charitable Projects Day of the National Roofing Contractors Roofing Week. The women and their companies gave an estimated $40,000 worth of labor and materials, which helps Project Homeless Connect devote more of their resources towards helping the more than 60 people who come to the shelter each day.

Stephanie Baird interviewed by KPTV

The women got a moment in the spotlight as they worked in the midday sun. A news crew from KPTV stopped by to interview them. In the story, Stephanie Baird, of Bliss Roofing, explained why she led the project “The Portland area has a huge homeless problem. We would rather be a part of the solution instead of being part of the problem. Instead of complaining about it, we decided to get something done.”

Helping the Helpers

Bliss Roofing has helped Home Building Foundation with multiple projects, recently assisting with Anisa’s Place for A Village for One, and HomePlate Youth Services. Earlier this year, Bliss Roofing won a Community Involvement Award from National Roofing Contractors Association because if its outstanding donations to community projects. The award came with a more than $8,000 cash prize, which Bliss Roofing generously donated to HBF. Other companies that helped with the June 6 event include Owens Corning, Dealer Supply, Stalcup, AA Rite Way,Solid Roofing, NW Raindrop Roofing, and Malarkey.

Women Roofers show their strength

The two older homes PHC owns provide a myriad of services such as meals, showers, clothing, counseling, and housing placement. The roofing is an important part of the estimated $200,000 remodel HBF is coordinating there. The Women in Roofing members join several volunteer groups which have contributed to this HBF project. Volunteers from Mountainwood Homes and Lennar Homes spent hours helping with the landscaping and exteriors. The Jewish gap-year program Tivnu helped build a new fence. Glencoe High students built a tool shed, and built another for a donation closet. Interior painting was provided by volunteers from the Oregonian and Fireside Home Solutions.  Like most HBF projects, funding for materials came from donations, or from private grant funders such as Banner Bank.

Home Building Foundation works with the building industry to build or remodel facilities for nonprofit service providers that work to stop homelessness. Over our 26- year history in the Portland area, we have completed close to 80 projects with a retail value over $13 million. Almost $5 million of that came in the form of in-kind donations of labor and materials. If you’d like to volunteer to help one of our projects, or to donate money to help us purchase supplies, go to BuildHopepdx.org for more information.
